Internet Wisdom

Within the past few weeks, this trip has really started to sink in.  Will I have enough money?  Will I like the countries?  Will I survive the hot, humid climate?  Can I stand the smell?  Will I get sick?  How am I going to tell work?  Will I be able to get a job when I get back?  All these thoughts have just been rushing through my head constantly this past week.  And if you're wondering, no, I haven't really been sleeping much.  Despite friends telling me it’s a great decision and that I won’t regret it, I can’t help but be terrified of leaving a consistent paycheck, a nice house and great life here in Denver.  But changes are always scary, right?  It’s been a while since I’ve made any significant moves in my life.  It’s waaaay past time that I do something.  Afterall, I am only 25!  I don’t want to be stuck behind a computer for the rest of my life!

So, today in my random bits of research and internet surfing at work I came across this thread on the Teton Gravity Research (TGR) website and suddenly I feel so much better about everything – yes, all from some silly message board with posts from people that I have never met and probably never will.  But I felt like we all had some connection – a desire to travel, a love of skiing and the thought that there has GOT to be something more than, as user XYZ put it, “staring at a computer screen".  So, even if no one reads this, at least I feel better knowing that I have this link saved somewhere and whenever I start feeling anxious, I can just go back and read.

Some memorable pieces of wisdom for those of you that don’t want to read through the whole thread online:

“You only live once, and you can't take money to the grave, so might as well enjoy your life while you're still able bodied.” – Crystal_Mt_Dreamin

“Too many people get a job and then never do anything other than work and say, "maybe next year," or "yeah, that sounds great, I am going to do that one of these days." – skibiker

“While Money and success are socially great to have, in one heart beat someone else can take that from you.  Live and create memories from life experience; in the end that's all you’re gonna have.” – admx

“Do it now before you have kids. Then do it again.  And then, once you have kids, move someplace where you can do it all over again…F*%# ‘em!” – puhisurfer

“...last year we made the same decision.  We sold a house, a truck, a lot of shit, and moved out of a great town and said goodbye to good friends. We travelled for a year, to six continents, skiing included.  We are now near broke and starting out from zero. It's hard to imagine just a few months ago we were in Tunisia and Madagascar and Oman. But we went back to our old home and visited our old friends, and they were exactly as we had left them, albeit 10 pounds heavier.  We saw the world. I learned French and shook hands with a lemur and ate Lao food and skied a volcano in Chile and surfed in Ecuador. They sat in traffic and went to the gym and watched TV.  What do you want to do?” – cloud_cult

“You can always make more money. You can never make more time. Take advantage of the time while you can.” – ski_adk
